Church Without Walls - the outcome

12 June 2003

THE CHURCH TOMORROW

Summary

During the tenth meeting in the CWW series each of 30 possibilities for change in the church were considered and placed in an action order. To simplify discussion and decision the 30 possibilities were placed into 6 sections and these were placed in an order of importance as the order in the following table. The topic(s) considered to the most important in each section are listed below.

No Section Topic Rank
C Communication Improve communication (frank and full communication)
Greater frequency of the Newsletter. Summaries of meetings of the Session and the Board. Important decisions reported in detail. This is essential but more resources needed.
Name badges for Elders Definitely 'worth a try'. Would be helpful to visitors.
"Meet your Elder" sessions. Would be worthwhile occasionally.
Participation, and reporting, of local and National Church Events and, maybe, secular events. This should be supported. Be involved. Tell others about the experience.
1
D People Using the Gifts of the people An essential activity that is central to the development of the Church 1
F Worship Review Worship Try to include more young people and generally review mode of Worship - change needed. 1
A Prayer Increase prayer opportunities Encourage more members to come to the Sunday morning time for prayer. Consider week day times for prayer 1=
Prayer Practical Prayer Develop outreach for Prayer requests, encourage the use of prayer diaries 1=
B Bible Adopt one Gospel Focussing on one Gospel for use by all organisations for 6 or 12 months. Activities would become 'Christ-centred'. Other parts of the Bible would be linked to the Gospel. Should be encouraged. 1
E Outreach and Discipleship Visiting the "non-attenders"! Develop the Pastoral Care group, make less use of the Supplementary Roll, and keep in touch with everybody. 1

The remaining 23 topics have been given priorities separately and these are given in the main report, available from Eric Marchant. The content of those pages are from the discussion document prepared for the 10th meeting,

It is suggested that the topics listed above are developed initially by 6 or 7 small groups each led by an Elder. The other members of the group would be selected from the whole membership by the lead Elder. Once the first change has succeeded, wholly or partly, then, after a brief period of review, the next topic could be developed.

The information in the questionnaires that have been returned (issued in the May 2003 Newsletter) will be helpful to the lead Elders when considering the membership of the new groups. Some of the topics listed above are very wide in scope and will need to be subdivided.

On Tuesday 17 June 2003 the Kirk Session received this report on the suggested changes at St Mungo's. As there are a large number of recommendations in this report it was decided that at the Session Meeting in September 2003 a date for a special meeting should be set when the proper amount of time can be given to this report. In the meantime any Elder wishing to be involved in a specific part of the suggested changes was asked to mention their interest to the Session Clerk.
