Chalices Head West

A wecome from the Calvin Presbyterian Church congregationThe recent sale of St. Mungo's silverware has not been a loss to the service of God, indeed the smaller pair of George II Scottish Silver communion cups (1731), have found there way to Toronto, and are in regular use as consecrated vessels.

They were bought by Roger Lindsay, Presbytery Elder at Calvin Presbyterian Church in Toronto. Roger has also served as the first non clerical Moderator of the Presbytery of East Toronto, as a national Trustee of the PCC, and as continuing Trustee of Calvin, as well as currently being the Vice-Convenor of the Board of Governors of Knox College. Originally from Dundee, before moving to Toronto in 1971, Roger is still technically an Elder of Craigiebank Parish Church in Dundee as well.

Roger and the congregation of Calvin are looking forward to February 3rd with the service of Presbytery inducting a new minister.  It will be a busy day since Toronto will also be celebrating the 50th anniversary of Accession Day for Her Majesty in the Anglican Cathedral with the Governor-General. As Roger is AdeC to Ontario's Lieutenant Governor - President of St. John Ambulance for Ontario - and a past Moderator of Presbytery - he is not sure which hat to wear!

Roger has a long interest in Scottish Silver and in particular with Church silver. He has been fortunate over the years to obtain a number of chalices - St. Leonard's, St. Andrews 1658 - Craig, Montrose 1680 - Conveth / Laurencekirk 1688 - Abertarff 1780 - so St. Mungo's / Penicuik joins a unique collection.

They continue to be in use as they were intended and are used regularly in Calvin - as well as elsewhere in the Presbyterian Church - and, from time to time in Anglican; Roman Catholic and United special services.

Roger is looking for the history behind the cups, and any information you have, we would all dearly like to hear. Please drop me an email with any snippets you may have, and I'll pass them all on together..
