St. Mungo’s new minister, Geoff Berry
was formally inducted as the resident minister on Thursday
8th October. Some 170 people attended the Ordination service in
the church and 150 followed on to the Hall for the welcome and
entertainment.
As well as an ordination team of some 18 from Presbytery the
church played host to Geoff’s parents, sister, brother in law
and nieces along with a good turn out of Penicuik folks. A fair
few from “down the coast”, Geoff’s previous stamping ground,
came along to wish Geoff good luck in his new charge.
The singing in the church uplifted everyone, making it a service
to remember. At the follow-on welcome in the Church Hall the Rev
John Fraser from the North Kirk, Father Robert Warren from St.
James the Less, and the Rev Ian Cathcart from the South Kirk
welcomed Geoff into the community of Penicuik churches. It was a
light-hearted fun evening in the Hall. The Rev Wayne Sutton, a
friend of Geoff’s from Carrubbers Close and the Rev Lawrence
Twaddle were full of praise for Geoff.
There was a hearty supper of sausage rolls, sandwiches, home
baking etc, care of the Social Committee, with a large cake
inscribed "Congratulations Geoff Welcome to St Mungo's"
Despite what the order of service said, the entertainment was
not Laurence Twaddle and Wayne Sutton! Andrew Dunsire played his
guitar and Vicky Middleton sang.
Geoff’ preached his first service on Sunday 18th focusing on
patience, and was very well attended. His choice of subject
seemed very apt as having been vacant for about two years we
have exercised great patience and not lost our enthusiasm or
faith, though we were beginning to waiver slightly!
We can now all plan the way forward for
St. Mungo’s with confidence that we are in good hands. |
