The children's story on Sunday 3rd
October had two of the boys acting out the story of Jacob ( Ross Jarmson) and
Esau (Ross Aitken). A classic from the book of Genesis this age old story tells
how Jacob tricked Esau into selling his rights as the first born son to him, and
later deceived their father Isaac (Bill Brown) into thinking he was Esau and
receiving his blessing.
As the first born Esau held the right to his father's estate, as shown by Isaac
giving Esau his birth certificate.
As the boys grew up Esau became a skilled hunter, loving the outdoor life. Jacob
on the other hand was quiet and stayed at home. Their father Isaac preferred
Esau because he enjoyed eating the animals Esau killed. Isaacs' wife Rebecca
however favoured Jacob.
One day while Jacob was cooking some bean soup, Esau came in from hunting. He
was hungry and said to Jacob, "I'm starving; give me some of that red stuff".
Jacob answered "I'll will give it to you if you give me your rights as the
first-born son". Esau replied "All right I am about to die of starvation, what
good will my rights do to me then?" Jacob had swindled the rights from his
brother.
When Isaac was dying, old and blind, he called for his son Esau to give him his
blessing. Esau had gone hunting to bring his father a final meal. Jacob, urged
on by his mother, put on Esau's clothes, to smell like Esau. As Esau was a hairy
man, Jacob put on a goatskin to make him feel hairy to the touch.
He approached Isaac with a meal cooked by his mother Rebecca, but Isaac was
suspicious as Jacob's voice did not sound like Esau. He felt his arms and
smelled his clothes, but still asked "are you really Esau?" "I am" answered
Jacob. Isaac gave his blessing to Jacob.
When Esau found out he was mad at Jacob and vowed to kill him.
Jacob sounds like the Hebrew for "heel" or "cheat".
Esau is taken to refer to Seir, the territory inhabited by
Esau's descendents. Seir sounds like the Hebrew for "hairy"
