Sunday 30th August 2009 heralded the farewell
service from Dr. John Stevenson, our locum minister for coming
up 2 years. John preached his last sermon in the series of the
life of Moses, which he had made into a "mini" serial of 6
episodes.

Dr. John Stevenson to bid him a fond farewell |
Sunday school showed their appreciation of
john's many stories to the children, by presenting him with a
gift. It was a touching moment as John has become to the children
of the Sunday School an almost permanent figure in their Christian
life.
John’s story with the children reflected that and his story
focused on "start again", and how often we wish sometimes that if only we could
start again things would be better. Jesus himself was an advocate
of "starting again" enabling those who had strayed from the
Christian path of life, to put that behind them and "start again"
on a new journey. And so it will be with the Sunday School and
congregation of St. Mungo's as we start again with our new
minister Geoff Berry. New opportunities and challenges will no doubt be presented
to us as we move into the future, but these should be welcomed as
they take us on the never ending journey in the steps of Jesus
Christ.
After
the service we all gathered in the hall to allow the congregation
to thank John personally over a cup of tea, and for Session clerk
Sandy Robertson to present, on behalf of the Kirk
Session a small gift of appreciation. John
replied that he had enjoyed his time with the people of St.
Mungo's, and that this was
his 3rd retirement, following previous returns to the pulpit.
Though his locum duties have formally come to an end, we are
likely to see him once more
in our pulpit, at the end of September, whilst waiting for Geoff Berry to be approved by Presbytery
and inducted into our church in early October.
We all wish John and his family well for the future.
