St. Mungo's received a
new pulpit fall thanks to Church member and artist, Moira Dickson.
Inspired by a monastery trip on a Canadian holiday,
Moira designed and created the new fall which
was dedicated and blessed on Easter Sunday, 8th April 2007.
While visiting the Saint-Benoit-du-Lac monastery on the edge of
Lake Memphremagog, Moira went into the chapel where she was
privileged to hear a recital on a most magnificent pipe organ. It
was from this experience that the inspiration came for the Pulpit
Fall.
Playing around with ideas, Moira realised that in one of her
thumbnail sketches there appeared to be a figure with outstretched
arms. "Can you see the figure of Christ with the 12 apostles,
represented by 12 small circles, at his feet?" said Moira. "The
'stars' at the top, and the 'tubes' at the sides are my
interpretation of the organ stops and pipes. The copper circles
represent the sun and the moon, heavenly bodies."
Incorporated in the the work are the traditional symbolism:-
| Sun and Moon |
Male and Female, birth and death |
| The Rose |
Consecrated to Christ's mother |
| The Stars |
A watching, guiding providence |
And the colours:-
| White |
Being the greatest heat of
metal, symbolises God, the innocence of the soul, purity of
thought, and holiness of life. |
| Gold/Yellow |
Sovereignty, the sun, love,
constancy, dignity and wisdom. |
| Blue |
Eternity, faith, truth and
the feminine principle. |
| Purple |
Royal Majesty |
| Rose-Pink |
Divine Love |
These are among the many symbols used in Churches. Just look
around you in St. Mungo's.
