The Revs. Sheila and Graham
Blount preached Rev. Ron Smith into his new charge at St. Mungo's on Sunday 28th
November. Sheila normally ministers at Cupar in Fife, while Graham preaches at Falkirk.
Following a welcome from Session clerk, Ian Tait, Sheila opened the service with
Hymn 160, "Hark the glad sound". She followed with the children's address which
had all hands in the air as volunteers were called for! An enthusiastic Sunday
School joined in the story of Advent and Sheila taught the Children, and the
congregation I must add, our advent song, "Christmas is coming". We learned the
chorus and the first verse as this is the first Sunday of Advent.
We all sang Hymn 488 "Jesus bids us shine" before the children
headed off with their teachers. Bob Jarmson
read Judges 9, 7-18, Margaret Webster,
Luke 1, 26-35, before singing Hymn 318 "Mine eyes have been the glory".
Graham Blount preached the sermon based on the readings, how it
related to Christmas, the advent period which has just started, and the
induction of Ron Smith as minister for our Church. Like Christmas, we can either
watch as it happens, or we can be involved and shape the way we want St. Mungo's
to evolve. Ron will support and guide, but it will be the "church" of people who
will make it happen.
We sang Hymn 164 "Tell out my soul" before the
offering and prayers of dedication. Hymn 165 "O Come, O Come" was followed by
Ron closing with the Benediction. Ron will
preach his first full service on Sunday 5th Dec. |

The first candle
is lit.(Chorus)
Christmas is coming
The Church is glad to sing
And let the advent candles
Brightly burn in a ring
1
The first is for God's promise
To put the wrongs to right
And brings to earth's darkness
The hope of love and light.
2
The second for the Prophets
Who said that Christ would come
With good news for many
And angry words for some
3
The third for the Baptist
Who cried "Prepare the Way.
Be ready for Jesus,
Both this and every day".
4
The fourth is for the Virgin,
Who mothered God's own Son
And sang how God's justice
Was meant for everyone.
5
At last we light the candle
Kept new for Christmas Day
This shines bright for Jesus
Newborn, and here to stay. (last chorus)
Christ is among us
The candles in the ring
Remind us that our saviour
will light up everything |
