The
first Sunday Service of 2009 was taken by the some of the Elders of St. Mungo's
as part of the
Midlothian Presbytery initiative to raise £10000 for HIV/Aids
mission. Following the service the congregation were invited to join in a "Soup
& Bread" lunch and make a donation to the fund.
The service theme was based on "new beginnings" with readings from Genesis and
Mark, who takes up the story of Christ when he became a young
man. The Churches of Scotland also want a new beginning to push forward the
fight against HIV/AIDS which affects
around 40 million people throughout the world. That number increases in every region every day. In the UK alone, more
than 60,000 people are living with HIV and more than 7,000 more are
diagnosed every year.
This service will be repeated across all the churches in Lothian
Presbytery during January.
Eric Marchant led the service, with Margaret Webster, Eileen Marchant,
Sandy Robertson, Isabel Donachie, and Dorothy Paterson taking active parts.
A donation plate collected over £280, which together with £120 raised after the
Christmas Watchnight service, plus a retiral offering after the 11th January
service totals over £475 to this worthwhile cause.
A big thank you to all who contributed.
