Starting from the Church we headed to Peebles. Oops! This was
the Peebles Beltane weekend as well. Our early start beat the
rush, just, as the streets began to close for the gala.
Ian Dickson once again did the honours and took the lead for
the 4 hour walk, which took us along the Tweed, by Neidpath
castle on to Lynn Station where we stopped for lunch.
The walk along the south side of the river passed the spot
where last year Iain Tait and Bob Jarmson missed the turn
and ended up with a 4 mile detour before getting back on route!
Not so this time, as they made sure they followed the signs.
Our four legged friends enjoyed the walk, frequently dipping
into the river. Everyone ran for cover when they got out and
started to shake themselves dry. Little Murphy nearly took one
leap too many when he jumped over a wall, not realising it was a
parapet of a bridge over the river, with a 25-30 foot drop on
the other side! Fortunately he fell into thick grass on the
riverbank, and quickly recovered, though by Sunday he was very
stiff.
We passed a group unloading their canoes. Which way are you
going? I do think some of our group were quite keen for a quick
run home, as it was downstream by then to Peebles! Even a heron
watched us as it surveyed the river for lunch.
The local games were just about to start as we returned to
Peebles park, with the crowds beginning to gather. We piled back
into our cars and headed for some well earned refreshment at the
Leadburn Inn, and an end to a great walk. And we were still dry!
