Rev Ron Smith led the St Mungo's
Remembrance service on Sunday 13th of November. The congregation was
swelled with the members of the British Legion, Army Cadets, Air
Cadets, Boys Brigade, Girl Guides, Red Cross, and members of the
Council. This years Hunter and Lass also took part. Music was
provided by Penicuik Silver Band
Representing the Queen was the Deputy Lord Lieutenant
Sir Robert Clerk, accompanied by Lady Clerk.
The readings were taken from 1 Kings 18:8-16 (Elijah
and the Widow in Zaraphath) read by Sir Robert Clerk, and St. Mark
12:38-44 (The Widow's Offering). In
Flanders field the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are
the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take
up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
~Major John McCrae, May 1915.~
