Hats, Gloves, Scarves and Blankets - 16 November 2013

The results of St. Mungo's members who have been busy knitting hats, gloves, scarves cardigans, and blankets all through the year, were on display at the Sunday service on 16 November, before heading to eastern Europe and Romania to reach underprivileged children and elderly adults in time for Christmas to keep them warm.

This year the people of St. Mungo's and others in our community excelled themselves to produce some 490 items including 74 knee blankets, and a staggering 100, yes 100 teddy bears, along with the hats, gloves, scarves and small childrens cardigans.  Sheila Haig who organises the project reported "This is the best response ever, since we started this annual event. It is amazing how many people have been busy knitting and crocheting, and sewing throughout the year".

Extra tables had to be brought into the church to display all the items, such was the sheer number of items delivered for the project. Members of the congregation had a good look at the display both before and after the service. to see the outcome of all the months of furious knitting by a lot of people with knitting, crochet, and sewing skills. .

Destined for the under privileged children, and adults of eastern Europe, this years selection included even more teddy bears. Barbara Sprott just cannot put down the knitting needles of an evening.  100 little bears with a selection of knee blankets was the result when she had finished.

A total of 74 blankets, in a wide selection of colours and patterns were knitted along with a huge selection of hats and glove sets for young babies, children and adults. These and the teddy bears will find their way into the Blythswood Care Shoe Box Appeal which will be shipped to reach their destination for Christmas.

Organiser Sheila Haig gave a big thank you in front of the congregation, before the service, to all who contributed to the knitting of a total of some 490 items. The gifts will bring the Christmas cheer to many who would otherwise go without.

The St. Mungo's gift will be collected by Blythswood Care and shipped out to Romania, along with gifts from many other churches and charitable organisations in time for Christmas.

When so many calls on the generosity of the members of St. Mungo's are being made it is deeply moving that we still put the need of others less fortunate than ourselves at the forefront of our activities. True Christian values, reaching out the hand of help.
