Agnes keeping the scores

While Gordon asks the questions

St. James team scratch their heads

Smart Alec, the  teddy awaits new home.

Quiz Night - Wednesday 17 September 2014

We had five teams competing for our coveted Smart Alec of the Year Teddy Bear Trophy.  The team names were Box Cleverers, Kickers, Socialites, Cabbage Ha’ and 5 No’s (a reference to the following day’s referendum).

Once again Gordon MacDonald was quizmaster and Agnes Ovenstone kept the scores.  We began with the first round entitled “Birds” with questions like “A greedy Person” and “Could describe a couple of beers”, the answers of course being “Gannet” and “Toucan” – easy once you know them.

The next round was entitled “Miscellaneous” covering subjects such as Acids, Trivia, Flags, Medical Matters and General Knowledge.   A lot of discussion took place during the Acid questions e.g. what is dilute acid better known as? – Vinegar.

One of the trivia questions was what is the largest island in the Inner Hebrides?  There was a lot of whispering over this one, the answer of course being Skye.  When we came to Flags one of the questions asked what bird is shown on the flag of Uganda.  A whisper was heard from one team saying it’s a long legged one which is correct but we really needed to know which long legged one.  Not many got a crane.

Medical matters also caused a lot of thought and a lot of laughter with such questions as what are you doing if you are pandiculating which caused a lot of oh’s when yawning was revealed.

We then stopped for refreshments where there was a great selection of loaves baked by the ladies of the social committee together with tea or coffee.

General Knowledge started off with a question on what cocktail is made with vodka, galliano and orange juice.  A lot of heads were banged together before the answer Harvey Wallbanger was reached.  Another question asked what an infant whale is commonly called.  There seemed to be a lot of discussion taking place on this one which we thought was strange as the answer of a calf seemed quite straightforward.  It turned out that a few teams had misheard the question and thought they had been asked for the infant of a quail and all that could be thought of was a baby bird.  The hall was filled with laughter for quite a while.

Then came the bible questions.  This was where Hugh our minister had to leave his team as apart from being able to answer all of the questions he had set them so he was banned.  There were easy ones such as what is the sixth commandment and how many books in the New Testament.  The Sunday School charts for both of these questions are on the wall but there were many complaints that they could not be seen properly because of the curtain or that the print was too small to read from a distance. You know the answers but suddenly you doubt yourself and you can’t you be sure that you shall not kill is the sixth commandment or that there are 27 books in the New Testament.

The team from St. James the Less took the overall prize, Smart Alec of the Year, which they will keep until the quiz night returns next year.

Thanks to all who came along and supported this entertaining event
