- a new Sunday School Talent |
Rebecca Robertson
Karate isn’t the first talent you would
think of for a member of the Sunday School, but 10 year old Rebecca
Robertson, a familiar face in St. Mungo’s Sunday School,
recently showed off her Karate belts and tags to the congregation,
receiving loud applause for her efforts and successes over the
years. Here Rebecca tells us her story.
Hi
I’m Rebecca. I do Karate at Meadowbank Karate Club. I have
been doing it for five years, starting when I was five. I do three
classes a week, one on Tuesday, and two on a Saturday.
I
started with a different belt every three months, yellow, orange,
green, blue, purple, and brown. After the brown belt you work towards
getting your Tags.
Tags are awarded at your grading,
consisting of yellow, orange, green, blue, purple, 1st red, 2nd red and
black.
I had to do basics and Katas (Ed’s
note - detailed choreographed patterns of movements practised either
solo or in pairs.) for my grades, which can be 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place.
I have managed 2nd place for them all. Now I am working towards my
Black Belt, and been told to enjoy my training and continue to do my
best.
I have collected 15 medals in fighting and
Kata competitions. In 2009 I fought in the individual fighting event,
and also the team event, where my team came 1st for the National
Championships. I received two medals that day. Back
