Penicuik Street Fair - 24 August 2013

Report and Photos - Jim Paterson

The early damp foggy morning soon cleared and saw the crowds arrive for the annual Penicuik street fair, on Saturday 24th August in the shopping precinct. A wide selection of stalls stocked with all kinds of exciting items to buy, including lots to eat, joined a range of fun activities and entertainment.

Organised by the Penicuik and District Community council, the event was opened by Mose Hutchison, Citizen of the Year . The stall holders then presented their offerings while the Penicuik Silver Band drew their breath to provide the musical entertainment for the gathering crowd.

The children had plenty to keep them amused. A 'bouncy castle style slide attracted many of the more athletic types, while for the more sedate a carousel provided an exciting way of seeing the fair. No fair of course would be complete without a face painting, and the artist was kept busy turning faces into tigers, pussy cats and all sorts of animal faces.

The Rotary took a stand as did many of the Penicuik churches. Heading for those with home baking I called in at the North Church stall, and after a chat with Linda McDonald succumbed to a very attractive fruit loaf which will go well with my morning coffee! A number of the church members supported the prayer healing area, providing prayer support for those in need.

The local political party groups were displaying their policies and programmes, including the Green, Conservative, and the Scottish Co-operative Parties.

The Penicuik Hunter and Lass had a stall, and Hunter Daren Cogdon and Lass Sally Porteous were talking to the visitors, but also toured the other displays chatting to the many people in the precinct.

By now the Silver Band had completed their time and along came members of the Glencorse Pipe Band with a fine selection of pipe music which attracted some of the chhildren to see what was going on.

Later in the event Dance Point Studio and the highland dancers entertained the crowd.

It is good to see the Community Council working hard to put on the street fair and other activities within Penicuik. We all need,  as residents of Penicuik, to try and support these activities.
