            Requested Prayers

WOULD YOU LIKE to have Christians from churches in Midlothian praying for you or for someone you are concerned about?

In response to just this need our local presbytery has set up three local Prayer Chains.

Requests for prayer are passed around churches by phone; and individuals & groups pray confidentially for the people & situations they’ve been told about. If you’d like to put a request on to the prayer chain, either for yourself or for someone else, please contact Bill Webster (tel. 672347 or e-mail billandmags@talktalk.net).

February 2015

Sunday 1 February This afternoon sees the first Messy Church of 2015. Please pray that many families will come along and that parents/carers and children alike will experience God’s love for them and want to be part of His family.

Monday 2 February This morning the Kirk Session and Congregational Board are meeting representatives of Lothian Presbytery as part of the Place for Hope process. Please pray for insight and wisdom and for God’s grace to guide everyone concerned.

Tuesday 3 February The Christian charity World Vision asks us to pray for secondary-school children in deprived communities in Zimbabwe; particularly for Belinda and Tirivangani (who are receiving medication to control HIV/AIDS) and for Takwana (who has not yet been able to access medical help).

Wednesday 4 February Recent floods in Malawi and Mozambique have led to scores of deaths (among them 25 schoolchildren), and many thousands have been made homeless. A third of the area of Malawi has been declared a disaster zone. Please pray that resources will be offered from abroad, as the Malawian government has said it cannot cope on its own.

Thursday 5 February Pray for the residents in Aaron House, that they will be well looked after and feel wanted. And for the staff, that they will be happy in their work and have the energy they need to do it well.

Friday 6 February Please pray for the U.K. Government, and the Members of the Westminster parliament, including our local MP, David Hamilton, that in everything they are responsible for they will act with wisdom and fairness.

Saturday 7 February Please pray for the prayer request uplift today in Armine Place, Lomond Vale, Lawers Square, Vorlich Crescent and Ledi Terrace (held over from last week). Pray that the people we make contact with will know that God loves and cares for them.

Sunday 8 February Last month two suicide bombings left over 60 people dead in Nigeria, and many hundreds were reportedly killed when Boko Haram captured the town of Baga. Hundreds of thousands of people are in deadly danger in the parts of Iraq and Syria controlled by ‘Islamic State’. Please pray that these killings will come to an end.

Monday 9 February

Where today your church is in danger - protect it.
Where today you church is too comfortable - disturb it.
Where today your church stands with the poor - affirm it;
Where today your church hides behind the rich - confront it.
Where today your church proclaims its risen Lord –
fill it with your love

Tuesday 10 February   Please pray for the employees of the Citylink delivery firm, which recently went into liquidation, as well as the hundreds of oil workers (both onshore & offshore) thought to be in danger of being made unemployed in the near future.

Wednesday 11 February   Please pray for the residents of Heinsberg House, that they will be able to enjoy their continuing independence and also benefit from the community facilities offered there if they want to.

Thursday 12 February   Pray for St Mungo’s Kirk Session and Congregational Board, who are meeting this evening. Ask God to give them His wisdom and insight in all their discussions.

Friday 13 February   Our Mission Partner in Bangladesh, Pat Jamison, has asked for prayer that peace and stability will be restored there. Bus services have recently been a focus for political violence: in the last 3 weeks, 30 people have been killed, approximately 900 people injured and 321 vehicles torched many with staff or passengers on board.

Saturday 14 February
   Please pray for the healing on the streets initiative in Penicuik, taking place this morning (and on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month). Pray that the Lord’s healing power will be experienced, and that everyone involved will know that He loves and cares for them.

Sunday 15 February   Thank God that the recent elections in Sri Lanka (which was engulfed in civil war a number of years ago) were peaceful and that all the parties have accepted the outcome. Pray that this will be the beginning of a time of peace, reconciliation and justice for both the majority Sinhalese and the minority Tamil populations.

Monday 16 February
   Please pray for all the pupils and staff at Cuiken Primary School, that the staff will have the energy, commitment and wisdom they need and that each pupil will feel part of the community and be able to develop to their maximum potential.

Tuesday 17 February   Please pray for our friends in the South Kirk and Howgate Church, and for their Minister, Ian Cathcart, asking God to give them all the vision, love and energy they need to help build His Kingdom in our area.

Wednesday 18 February   Let’s thank God today for the Amity Foundation, an organisation set up by Christian leaders in China in the 1980s to develop projects in education, social service, blindness prevention, poverty alleviation, health care, rural development, relief and rehabilitation. And let’s pray that it will have the resources and freedom that it needs to develop these very necessary programmes even further.

Thursday 19 February

May the love of God,
true, pure and freely given,
uphold us every moment,
so that love can flow through us
to the people around us
every day
AMEN

Friday 20 February   Thank God for the work done by the various food banks in Penicuik and around the country. Let’s pray that we will organise ourselves in such a way that food banks are no longer necessary, but also that in the meantime they will all be fully resourced.

Saturday 21 February   Today let’s pray for Mojtaba and Vahid, Iranian Christians held in jail for the last 3 years because they had attended house-church meetings and shared the Gospel with their friends. Please pray for their release, and also that the Holy Spirit will change the hearts of those in power in Iran, so that sharing the Gospel and taking part in house meetings are no longer regarded as crimes.

Sunday 22 February   Tomorrow evening is the first of three meetings of St Mungo’s congregation. Hosted by the Church of Scotland’s Future Focus team, they are an opportunity for us all to get together and explore what kind of church God wants us to be and what He wants us

Monday 23 February Please pray today for the people of Israel and of the Palestinian territories. The hatred felt by many people on both sides is so entrenched and the situation so complex that even the best human efforts look unlikely to lead to a just and lasting solution. Let’s ask God to overrule our human inadequacies and bring that about.

Tuesday 24 February

God of the beginning and the end,
Alpha and Omega,
may you bless us as we travel from the old to  the new;
may the words of Christ call us from old patterns to new ideas;
and may the Holy Spirit hold us
when we are afraid to leave what we know
to discover what we might become
AMEN

Wednesday 25 February   Pray for the work done by relief and development agencies such as Christian Aid, Tearfund and SCIAF, as they try to combat Third World poverty, encourage fairer international trade rules and cope with sudden, large-scale emergencies.

Thursday 26 February   Please pray for our friends in the Sacred Heart Church and for their recently arrived Priest, Tadeusz Majcher, asking God to give them all the vision, love and energy they need to help build His Kingdom in our area.

Friday 27 February   Pray for Christians in Uzbekistan, where it is illegal simply to have Christian literature in your home. Individual houses can be raided at any time. Ask God to strengthen the people who are being persecuted in this way, and to change the mind of the authorities, so that they no longer regard Christians as a danger to the state.

Saturday 28 February   The Leprosy Mission is running special surgery camps in Bangladesh in March. They ask us to pray that these camps will reach many people with life-changing surgery who would otherwise never have a chance to receive it.

Please use as many of these suggestions as you usefully can, and please let me know if there is anyone or anything you would like to see included in future months.
